(Dates show approximate starting production date)

Cloud (06_L2) HDF products are produced from the Program Executable (PGE) identified as PGE06. One may identify the maturity and quality of an HDF data product by finding the PGE (program executable) version that was used to produce the file. This information can be obtained directly from the HDF file itself by using the HDF utility ncdump. The (UNIX) command is ncdump -h *.hdf | awk '/PGEVERSIONCLASS/,/END_GROUP/' . One may also find PGE version information in the ascii text met (metadata) file associated with a particular HDF file. Another slightly less reliable way to determine the PGE version is through the "processing date & time" field of the HDF filename (field #5 in L2 HDF files, see HDF Filename convention). Users then match the processing date in the HDF filename with the production start date for various PGE versions in blue in the listing below. If you have any questions about this, contact Paul Hubanks.

PGE06 v51.0.0 includes:       ( Aqua (only) Forward & Reprocess: 1.Nov.2008 )

  • Cloud Optical Properties and Cloud Top Properties Fix
High Impact Collection 051. To obtain a summary of the changes in PGE06 for Collection 051, see the Collection 051 Change Document (linked to the right). The changes are listed in the "Cloud (06_L2)" section.   View the PDF Document (PDF)

PGE06 v5.12.4 includes:       ( Aqua & Terra Forward [005]: ~10.Sep.2007 )

  • Cloud Optical Properties (v5.9.4,3,2)
High Impact Striping Fix. Made a change to the handling of uncertainty indices for band 29 to compensate for the fact that in 2007 on Terra MODIS band 29 detector 6 went dead. This resulted in unwanted striping in the Level-2 product because band 29 was being used for phase determination for thin cirrus clouds. Every 6th line of every granule that contains any thin cirrus is affected by cloud phase being erroneously turned to water and the subsequent retrieval failing in most cases
Click to view document High Impact Cloud Optical Thickness Retrieval Dropout Fix. Implemented a fix to the Rayleigh correction code that was causing dropouts in the Tau ~11.5 for water and Tau ~8.5 for ice range. This also impacts all L3 downstream related SDSs including Cloud Effective Radius, Cloud Water Path, Cloud Phase and Cloud Fraction for Optical Properties. Every retrieval over land was affected. For more detail on this problem and its impact, see the Cloud Optical Thickness over Land Problem document   [ View PDF ].
  • Cloud Top Properties (v5.3.1)
Moderate Impact Correct Negative Moisture Profiles. Changed in the cloud top properties source code to handle moisture profiles that previously returned negative values.

PGE06 v5.11.0 includes:       ( Terra Forward & Reprocess: ~1.Feb.2006 )

  • Initial Collection 005 Version
High Impact Start of C005. See Cloud Optical Properties change document (PDF) linked from the Collection 005 Update page to view Collection 004 to Collection 005 changes and improvements.
